Women Coping with Acne

Friday, January 16th, 2009

When you’re a teenager acne is viewed as an uncomfortable part of growing up. It always seems to get worse right before that big date or the school dance. You do everything you can to get rid of it while waiting to just simply outgrow it. So, as you slip into your twenties you assume that it’ll all be gone. Too often it doesn’t work like that. While the boys are getting over their acne problems some girls are still trying to figure out when it is going to stop. With all the ongoing hormonal changes that a woman goes through, and the pregnant years, acne can be an ongoing problem. Five percent of all women over forty still have some acne condition and this will last until menopause. Only one percent of men over forty still have acne to deal with.

Sometimes acne can be a sign of things that are not going right in your body. It can be a warning sign that there may be hormonal or pituitary gland issues that you must bring to the attention of your health care provider. You’ll know this if your acne suddenly stops responding to treatment that had always been successful previously. Or if after not having any acne at all or not for a number of years you suddenly have of a serious outbreak. Another sign to watch for is if you should find your acne gets worse during pregnancy or menstruation. If any of these acne changes occur go to see your health care provider immediately. They will likely want to do an overall physical to make sure that nothing has suddenly become unbalanced.

Woman also find that in their twenties or even thirties they may experience episodes of mild acne for no known reason. None of the teenage remedies work any more because this bout will be because of different hormonal changes. These kinds of changes can be due to a woman’s monthly cycle and can even make for acne that follows the cycle’s changes. The more hormonal action going on the more acne the woman has. Then as the levels lower the acne does too or it even completely disappears. In these cases over the counter lotions and creams won’t be able to do anything and instead you will have to see your dermatologist for some prescription anti-acne medications.

One of the easiest methods of controlling acne in women is to put them on the pill. That’s right your dermatologist will likely suggest using oral contraceptive pills to regulate your hormone levels and control the acne. They will suggest a pill with a low dose. Unless the woman is looking to get pregnant at that moment this solution is actually a very good one for treating mild to moderately bad acne. Some women don’t like using the pill because some can have mild side effects. There are other similar remedies that a dermatologist can offer then a woman will have to choose what best suits her.

What Is Acne?

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Acne is a problem for over seventeen million people in America. It is so common among young teens, who are going through the life changes of puberty, that is has become looked on as a rite of passage from childhood through the teenage years into adulthood. That doesn’t mean you should just ignore it, but that you need to learn how to deal with it. The way to begin is to understand what it is.

Acne, which encompasses multiple skin conditions, is caused when the pores in a person’s skin become blocked by dead skin or body oils. These oils, called Sebum, normally do the job of keeping your skin or hair from drying out. The most common acne in teenagers is called Acne Vulgaris. This is found mainly on the face, upper back and shoulders. In teenagers it is the hormonal changes that seem to send the wrong messages and so wind up encouraging an overproduction of the body’s oils.

The clogged pores actually become infected and that is when the pimples come up. When this happens there are one of four results. The infection either comes out as a whitehead, a blackhead, a pimple or a cyst. Although most people see these as the same each one has its little differences. A whitehead is a caused when the pore gets blocked but still remains closed. A blackhead is just the opposite and is a blocked pore that has remained open. A pimple, which usually looks pink or reddish, is what happens when the blocked pore bursts allowing everything that is blocking it to get under the skin. Finally, a cyst, this is not unlike a pimple but is what happens if the pore bursts deeper under the skin. The deeper the infection the more swelling there is likely going to be.

Now that you know what is on your face, shoulders or back what are you supposed to do about it? To begin with when you wash your face, or wherever the acne is, do it gently using warm water and a mild soap. This can help to contain the infections and often will go a long way to getting rid of the problem. Dermatologists will tell you not to try popping them, don’t squeeze them or pick at your acne.. This can be very difficult when you feel that it’s the only thing that might improve the way it looks. But skin doctors claim that by doing that you are only risking spreading the infection from the oils in your hands. This also can potentially make for scarring.

One other cause of acne can be a reaction to certain medications and for this one it doesn’t matter how old you are. Some of the medicines that can be a problem are seizure medications or drugs that effect hormone levels. If you have this side effect talk to your health care provider. They may be able to suggest another medication that can do the same thing without causing this reaction.

The Breakdown on Types of Acne

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Acne is actually a condition that comes in quite a few varieties. The only reason to be interested in the different types is that each classification will come with a treatment that works just for it. The most common kind of acne is called acne vulgaris. Although people looking at the word immediately think of the word vulgar that has nothing to do with the actual meaning. This group of acne is what drives teenagers crazy when they are just about to go on that big date or to the school dance they’ve been waiting for, for months, and discover their faces covered with a terrible outbreak of blemishes. This type of acne is found in people with oily skin the most. There are three particular types to this acne, non-inflammatory lesions that are the blackheads and whiteheads, inflammatory lesions that include red bumps of various sizes and anything that could be considered squeezable and secondary lesions that are the ones that have been picked, recently healed pimples or scars.

Comedonal acne is the kind of whiteheads or blackheads that do not become inflamed. They are usually on the chin or forehead. This acne can worsen with high humidity, hormones fluctuations or the use of certain products on the face. Infantile acne is just what it sounds like, an acne that only affects babies. It usually goes away in the first few months after the baby is born. Acne in pregnancy is also a kind with its own symptoms. A woman will often get a fairly bad outbreak in the first trimester but as the pregnancy continues and the hormone changes abound, it clears up. A pregnant woman should not use any kind of treatment until after her baby is born.

Acne conglobata is a form of acne vulgaris, but it is worse in its symptoms. This one is more common in males with the outbreak often being on the chest and back, with some on the face. Acne fulminans is actually an even more severe form of acne conglobata. Not only does it begin all of a sudden but it affects other things as well as the normal kind of pimple outbreak. With this a person will frequently have a fever, aching joints, weight loss due to a diminished appetite, and even a raised white blood count. This type of acne, more prevalent in males, will actually make a person feel ill.

There is also acne mediamentosa that is caused by a reaction to medications. These are usually medications that are hormone based like anabolic steroids or occasionally oral contraceptives for women. Oddly these very same contraceptives are sometimes prescribed to help women suffering bad acne outbreaks.

The last one is acne excori. It is more common in the fairer sex and is the aftermath of pimples, whiteheads or blackheads that have been picked. Even after these have healed the picking can still leave sores, scars and marks. The best treatment for this problem is to completely stop picking.

Kitchen Products Make Great Acne Remedies

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Who would have thought that some of the best natural acne remedies are hiding out in your own kitchen? If you are reluctant to use more of those lotions that dry your skin, or the other creams, ointments or soaps that are supposed to rid you of acne problems, but don’t always work, why not try a more natural route to acne care. There are many possible acne cures that are based on using the things we eat, drink and season with that have proven results in offering benefits to our skin.

Turmeric, a plant that is a member of the ginger family, is used in a few recipes for acne care. In one you mix it with sandalwood powder and milk, which makes a powder you, can put on your face. Or try mixing turmeric powder with mint juice. Put this on your face where the acne is, leave for fifteen minutes and then gently wash it off with warm water. Repeat until the acne clears.

Instead of making a salad take your cucumber and mush it up in the blender. Take the paste and put it all over your face, leaving it there for twenty to thirty minutes. Remove it by gently rinsing with warm water. This will not only help to prevent acne but it will make your face feel fresh. While you have your blender out you may want to instead try taking orange peels and grinding them up. Put this on the areas where you have acne. This is known to be a fairly successful remedy.

You can also use herbs as acne remedies. Basil is a good example. Take a couple of spoonfuls of the dried leaves and let them steep in boiled water, just like making a cup of tea, but this should remain steeping for closer to twenty minutes. Then let it cool before using a cotton ball to rinse your face with this treatment.

This one may sound a little odd as we’re taught not to mix things that can curdle. But in this case you should try to mix some fresh squeezed juice from a lime in with boiled milk and use it to wash your face. Or try taking some egg white and apply it softly to the infected areas. Leave it on for a minimum of twenty minutes during each treatment. Or you can try black cumin seeds, ground up first, and then mixed into a paste with vinegar. This may work for you.

Any of these pastes, or liquids, that you put on your face must be washed off after the treatment period with warm water in a gentle manner. Scrubbing them off will only aggravate the sores that you are trying to treat. As well, before using any of these remedies you should do a little research to find exact lengths of time to leave them on your face. Most are fifteen to thirty minutes. Treatments will likely continue for several days until you have the desired results.

Back Acne

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Back acne can be a problem that many athletes have to deal with because of the two major causes one of them is sweat. The more a person works out the more they will sweat. If they also wear tight fitting clothing then there is little doubt that they will develop some degree of back acne. This condition is also hereditary, so if one of your parents has suffered with this problem you likely will too. When it’s caused because of hereditary it is more likely a hormonal problem. The term bacne has been coined to describe this uncomfortable problem.

There are some things you can do to keep this under control and make it less uncomfortable. First if you are feeling sweaty have a shower, more than once a day will not hurt you. When you’re in the shower use some type of back scrubber to help remove dead skin. Be careful when using the back scrubber so as not to rub too hard and accidentally rip open any of the acne.

Make sure you do not wear clothing that is too tight. This will not allow the skin to breath and so encourages sweating. As well, changing your top a couple of times a day to keep bacteria buildup under control is another way to help keep the outbreak of back acne to a minimum. Other useful tips include powdering your back after showering. A little unscented baby powered can keep the skin from sweating. Some people even go so far as to spray their backs with antiperspirant. But this can have adverse effects if you sweat a lot.

Wearing clothing made from cotton is an advantage because it will help your skin breathe. Although it is common sense to keep yourself clean and to change your clothes daily, if you have back acne you must make sure you put on all clean clothes each day. This should include changing bras daily. Another point to remember is that when using exercise mats you should put a towel under your back to help absorb the sweat.

One thing that might be able to help treat the back acne is a mixture of lye soap ad tea tree oil. This will soften the skin, and help to control the oils in the back. People who suffer with back acne should not sleep on waterbeds. The heat of the mattress will irritate the skin and cause the sleeper to sweat. This will only cause more acne.

Acne on the back is more much difficult to treat than acne on the face. If its really bad it isn’t unusual for the sufferer to require prescribed antibiotics from their dermatologist. One of either minocycline or tetracycline may be suggested. As well there are prescription washes that will help to clean the bacteria away that is causing the acne. After using the wash follow it by using a prescribed cream or lotion. Given time and care an episode of back acne can be brought under control.

Baby Can Get Acne Too

Friday, January 16th, 2009

It is normal for infants to have acne. It is called acne neonatorum. It is very common, occurring in at least twenty percent of all infants. It will start immediately after the baby is born because it is a problem based on hormones from the mother, which remain after the delivery, causing this type of infant acne. They show themselves as small red pimples on the face, particularly the forehead, cheeks, and chin.

There is also just regular infant acne that often shows up around the age of three weeks old. More prevalent on baby boys than girls, it also is mainly on the face, though sometimes it can be seen on the scalp as well. As this type of acne will go away without treatment, usually before the fourth month, it is best left alone. It’s a good idea to gently wash the baby’s face with a very mild soap then rinse with warm water at least once daily. Don’t use anything else on baby’s face like creams or lotions, as this is likely to cause more problems and will not hasten the acne’s departure.

Parents should not worry if their baby develops acne. It does not mean that they are not taking good care of their child. Some parents think it means that they are not cleaning their baby properly, but this is not true. Other parents feel guilty that if they had acne as teens, which most did, then it is their fault that the baby has acne. This also is not true.

There are other kinds of acne that an infant may get. One type is called milia. This type is not there when the baby is born but will appear usually after the first week. It can be caused by a baby having spent time in an incubator, wearing clothing that does not allow the skin to properly breathe or having a fever. This type also goes away quickly. You can help it do that by reducing baby’s sweating. Cool baths can help this.

Infantile acne is one more type of acne your baby can suffer from. This one has a slightly later onset, usually about three months of age. This type is more serious then the others and will have baby’s face covered with whiteheads and sometimes little pustules. They are most likely to be on baby’s cheeks and little nose. They will disappear by the time baby is a year old, while the odd time it will last into their third year. Treatment is not recommended in this case either other then the common sense use of gentle soaps to wash baby’s face. But if it is causing baby distress or discomfort using a little benzoyl peroxide can assist in easing the swelling. If this still does not seem to make baby more comfortable talk to your health care provider about some lotion or cream to use on your baby’s delicate skin. This isn’t serious and it will go away on its own.

Acne Remedies Are all Around Your House

Friday, January 16th, 2009

There are many things that can be done to help an acne problem without using prescription medications, over the counter cures, or straight off the shelf lotions and creams. Many times the best cure is waiting for you somewhere in your house where you least expect it.

A good example of this is toothpaste. Put toothpaste on your acne right before you are going to bed. Wash it off as soon as you get up in the morning. After you have used it for a few days you should find the pimples disappear. This is because it dries up the oils and so helps the acne heal.

There are many food-based remedies that people believe help to counter acne outbreaks. One is the use of tomato pulp. A home remedy uses this pulp, on the face for an hour before being washed off. After a few uses it is supposed to help the acne go away. There are some who believe that applying the juice from a freshly squeezed lemon and allowing it to stay on the skin overnight will help. If you try this make sure to wash your face thoroughly in the morning. Others take this a step further by adding rose water to the lemon juice and letting this mixture sit on the face for about thirty minutes a day. In fifteen days the acne should be gone. If it is food remedies that interest you grate some potatoes and put them on any acne you have. Or is its something a little sweeter you prefer mix cinnamon with honey. Then take this paste and put it on before going to sleep. A towel on your pillow would be a good idea when using this remedy. Wash it off with warm water in the morning. If you would like to try one a little smellier rub fresh garlic all over the areas with acne. Many of these remedies are to be repeated until the acne clears up.

Other home remedies include using the essential oil of lavender on your acne. Maybe instead you’d prefer to drink something that can help you. Try wheat grass juice; this can both cure and prevent acne. Or drink a slice of lemon in boiled water when you would otherwise have a cup of coffee or tea. Try rubbing ice on the areas where you have acne before going to sleep.

Neem is a very useful ingredient in acne cures. There are soaps with Neem in them that you can use. Used twice daily they will help your skin. Neem also comes in capsules that can be taken daily. These are supposed to not only help to cure the acne you have but to prevent further outbreaks. Why does this work so well? Neem is supposed to be a blood purifier and enhancer of the body’s immune system. It appears to fight the infections of the skin. Research has proven it to be very effective in treating skin disorders of many kinds.

Acne Realities

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Since we know that acne is caused by a blocking of the skin’s pores due to body oils and dead skin this should tell you that some of the things you may have been told about what causes acne is very wrong and should not be believed. To begin with that means that eating greasy foods like pizza, bacon, french fries or potatoes chips will not affect your acne either way. Neither will eating chocolate or drinking any kind of carbonated soda pop. Wearing make-up is also not likely going to affect your skin, especially if the make-up is the type that is oil free.

If your parents had acne as teens you likely will as well. But for most people by the time they begin to ease into the twenties its already beginning to disappear. There are some things that can be done to minimize an acne outbreak. Be sure to wash your face with warm water and a mild soap once in the morning and again at night before bed. Do not use a facecloth, as it could be too rough on your face and so aggravate the already tender skin. Use your hands instead.

Anything that you put on your face, including your makeup, sunscreen, or moisturizer should be oil free. Make sure you always remove all of your makeup before going to bed. When you exert yourself in any way and you are sweating because of it, make sure your wash your face. Keep your hair off you face. Your hair has its own oils and you don’t want them rubbing onto your face. Make sure you wash your hair regularly to avoid the oils aggravating your skin. If you use any hair care products like sprays or gels to keep your hair in place do your best to keep these off your face. They can block up your pores. If you must wear caps or hats keep an eye to make sure that they don’t encourage acne along the hairline. One of the most important things to remember is not to touch your face excessively. That only takes the dirt and oils from your hands and puts it on your face. Equally important is to refrain from picking, touching, popping or squeezing the pimples, this can cause them to get much worse.

You can find many different acne medications at your local drug store. There are many to choose from and you may find that what works for your best friend may do nothing for you. There are lotions or creams that can help. The best ones have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid in them. They help to dry out the skin and shrink the offending pimples. Make sure you follow the directions carefully. Do not over use the products or you can do more damage to your skin than good. Don’t panic, if you don’t find something that works arrange to visit your dermatologist and they will likely find you something you can use.

Acne Prevention Tips

Friday, January 16th, 2009

The best thing you can do in the fight against acne is to try everything you can do to prevent it and to keep it from spreading. Many of the things you should do are common sense applications of hygiene and face care. But there are some things that could be done that you may not think of. Since acne is caused when your face has too much oil and dead skin, which then clogs the pores, you should wash your face twice daily with a good soap. Some people suggest using a sulfur-based soap. Do not scrub your face that will only irritate your skin. Always wash gently and do not wash your face too often.

If you are going to use a moisturizer on your face, make sure it does not have an oil base. This is also something that should be considered by women who are going to wear make-up. What ever is going on a woman’s face should not have an oil base. A make-up with a water base is much better. Also, avoid wearing make-up as much as you can. But if you must wear it, make sure that you remove it before going to bed each night. Never sleep in your make-up.

Long hair can be a problem during an acne outbreak. A person’s hair contains a lot of oils. It also catches a lot of dust and dirt. Then the hair rubs against the face depositing this dirt and oil on the skin. Some doctors will suggest keeping your hair short to prevent this ongoing problem. Others will say that if you choose to keep your hair long tie it back as often as you can to prevent this ongoing transfer of oils from happening.

If an acne outbreak is beginning avoid the sun’s rays. They can be very hard on the skin and even make the acne worse. As well, do not use sunscreens that have an oil base.

Some health care providers, and some friends, will advise you that certain supplements will help prevent acne. One that is frequently suggested is taking Vitamin A. It is known to prevent acne and improve a person’s skin. It also goes a long way to diminish the production of sebum. Sebum is another name for the oils that are the main culprit in causing acne. Others will advise the use of a chromium supplement, or taking a daily complement of zinc.

Don’t wear tight clothes. These make you sweat and if you are someone who gets acne on your back the sweating will increase the chances of an outbreak. Change your sheets, and especially your pillowcase, regularly. If you are in the middle of an outbreak change your pillowcase every few days so you are not lying in the oils that are rubbing off of your face.

You may not be able to completely prevent it but if you follow some of these tips you’ll have a good chance of keeping your acne under control.

Acne Myths

Friday, January 16th, 2009

It is so difficult when you are a teenager trying to figure out what to do about your acne and you hear stories about why its caused and how to treat it that don’t seem to make sense to you. You think that if people are telling you things they must be true. Right? Wrong. Many of the things you’ll hear about acne are myths, old wives tales, and fiction created over many years by people who were looking for the answers to the mysteries of acne.

Someone needs to dispel these myths. You’ve probably heard that chocolate and fatty foods cause acne. This is not true. Studies have proven that the only thing in your diet that can aggravate your acne is iodized salt. Diet is completely unrelated to acne outbreaks. Enjoy the foods you love to eat. But if you suspect that something you eat is affecting your acne what you are likely seeing is a food allergy. Talk to your health care provider at once.

Some people think that only teenagers get acne. This is not true either. Twenty percent of all infants have an episode of acne. Five percent of all women over forty still deal with acne problems and will until menopause. At the same age one percent of men still have some acne problem.

Many of you will have heard that poor hygiene cause acne. No, it doesn’t. Usually people with acne actually over wash their faces trying to rid themselves of the blemishes. This actually isn’t good as it can irritate the acne. Acne is caused by an overproduction of body oils that clog the pores and no amount of washing or scrubbing can change that. At the same time acne sufferers believe that lying in the sun will benefit their skin condition by drying out these access oils. Unfortunately, the suns rays do nothing for your skin accept cause wrinkles, and potentially lead to skin cancer.

If you are taking antibiotic medication to help clear up your acne once the acne is gone do not stop taking the medication. Many people think that is okay to stop since they cannot see any reason to take it once the blemishes have cleared. This is wrong. You must never stop taking any kind of medication without your doctor’s agreement. Stopping the medication before its time could easy cause it to come right back.

Other odd myths that people still believe include that sex causes acne; this is not true at all. What about stress causes acne? This too is not correct. Though stress has been known to make acne worse if doesn’t cause it. This is not as silly as suggesting leave it alone and it’ll go away. Although if you have acne you are encouraged not to touch it or pick at it, you needn’t ignore it either. There are some things that will help improve your acne though if you’ve heard there is a cure, sorry but that one isn’t true either.
