How do you stop a panic attack?
LindsayS asked:
I am having ( I think ) panic attacks in school. I have headaches, dizziness and I sometimes shake. My heart races with like every breath I take. I always know when a panic attack is coming because I feel like the room gets brighter and I get really dizzy and my heart races. I haven’t been in school for a week now because I don’t want to pass out. I am not usually the type that misses school.

Also, I have no idea what is triggering these attacks. There is nothing at school that upsets me or could hurt me. I love school. Can anyone help?

See your doctor, you could be suffering from something completely different. Is there a history of epilepsy or heart trouble in your family? Bright lights and headaches, make me think epilepsy. Seek medical attention immediately.

I used to get panic attacked while I was in class. Do you feel trapped? Is that what is triggering them? Watch your breathing and take deep breaths…slowing and constantly. When you start to panic, your breathing is typically shallow, which causes the dizziness. Practice breathing at home deep from your stomach, so you can do it in class.

Is there any other time when you are having these panic attacks? And how often do they occur? What are you doing just before the panic attack occurs? (you might need a journal to answer this one.) These are some of the questions a doctor should ask you when you go to see him or her. There are medications you can take that will prevent the attacks from occuring. Deep breathing and other relaxation exercises will help you to deal with a panic attack once it starts.
Please go back to school. Even if you have these panic attacks you can use some of the suggestions you get here to deal with them. Realize that the coping skills will take time to learn. The sooner you start dealing with them the better.
Please feel free to email or IM me if you want.
